The He(Iα) Photoelectron Spectra of Substituted 1,2-Dithietes

The He(Iα) photoelectron (PE.) spectra of a series of substituted 1,2-dithietes have been recorded and assigned with respect to the orbital sequence derived from an STO-3G model calculation and by correlation with the PE. spectra of related compounds. The results provide additional support for the presence of a closed, four-membered ring moiety in all the 1,2-dithietes investigated. In all cases the two highest occupied molecular orbitals are b₂(π)= HOMO, a₂(π), with exception of 3,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,2-dithiete where the sequence b₂(π), a₂(π) or a₂(π), b₂(π) is uncertain.

Zusammenfassung Die Bedingungen für die Kondensation von Benzil mit monomerem und dimerem Malonsäurenitril werden überprüft und für das 2-Benzoyl-2-phenyl-äthylen-1,1-dicarbonitril (2a) sowie das 2-Amino-4-benzoyl-4-phenyl-1,3-butadien-1,1,3-tricarbonitril (1a) die Strukturen sichergestellt. Unter dem Einfluß von wäßrigen Alkalien erleidet2a eine 1,2-Arylverschiebung und durch Cyclisierung entsteht das 2,5-Dioxo-4,4-diphenyl-pyrrolidin-3-carbonitril (7a).

Syntheses with nitriles, XXIII.: Anionotropic 1,2-Shift of aryl groups in benzil-malononitrile condensation products

The condensation conditions of benzil with monomeric and dimeric malononitrile have been reinvestigated and the structures of 2-benzoyl-2-phenyl-ethylene-1.1-dicarbonitrile (2a) and 2-amino-4-benzoyl-4-phenyl-1.3-butadiene-1.1.3-tricarbonitrile (1a) elucidated. With aqueous alkali2 undergoes 1.2-arylmigration and cyclization yielding 2.5 dioxo-4.4-diphenyl-pyrrolidine-3-carbonitrile (7a).

     

A graph theory approach to subcontracting, machine duplication and intercell moves in cellular manufacturing

We address in this paper the problem of finding an optimal strategy for dealing with bottleneck machines and bottleneck parts in the cell formation process in group technology. Three types of economic decisions are considered: subcontracting, machine duplication and intercell moves. The problem is formulated as a minimum weighted node covering problem in a hypergraph, and we show that it can be solved in polynomial time by finding a maximum weighted stable set in a bipartite graph. We extend this result to cellular manufacturing systems in which the sequence of operations of each part is known in advance.     

On-target fraction collection for the off-line coupling of capillary isoelectric focusing with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry.

In the present work, we describe a collection system for the off-line coupling of capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. In this system, the capillary effluent is directly deposited in fractions onto the MALDI target via the use of a sheath liquid. The collected fractions are subsequently supplemented with matrix and further analysed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for mass assignment. The experimental set-up includes a fiber optic based UV detector operating at 280 nm, which allows the study of the influence of the sheath liquid composition on the CIEF separation. The influence of the carrier ampholyte concentration on the protein MALDI spectra was also evaluated and the feasibility of the collection method was finally demonstrated with a mixture of four standard proteins.     

Cord-slope form of Taylor's expansion in univariate global optimization

Interval arithmetic and Taylor's formula can be used to bound the slope of the cord of a univariate function at a given point. This leads in turn to bounding the values of the function itself. Computing such bounds for the function, its first and second derviatives, allows the determination of intervals in which this function cannot have a global minimum. Exploiting this information together with a simple branching rule yields an efficient algorithm for global minimization of univariate functions.
